{"id":130,"date":"2013-03-19T08:35:36","date_gmt":"2013-03-19T13:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.danesi3d.com\/scottdanesi.com\/?p=130"},"modified":"2013-06-10T10:46:37","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T15:46:37","slug":"how-to-connect-an-led-sign-to-the-arcade-tournament-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottdanesi.com\/?p=130","title":{"rendered":"How to Connect an LED Sign to The Arcade Tournament Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey Everyone,<\/p>\n<p>So I have been getting a few questions about how to properly connect an LED sign to my tournament software. \u00a0It is actually pretty simple and I will walk you through it below.<\/p>\n<h2>Supported Displays:<\/h2>\n<p>First things first, let&#8217;s talk about supported displays. \u00a0Currently, I have only tested the software with my BetaBrite 213C and my Alpha 220C. \u00a0These are some of the most common signs you can find that are affordable. \u00a0The BetaBrite signs also came included in the Tournament TOPS Kits from Stern Pinball. \u00a0I plan on testing other types and brands very soon.<\/p>\n<h2>Display Connection:<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_132\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottdanesi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/BetaBrite-Connection-Info2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-132 \" alt=\"BetaBrite Connection Info2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottdanesi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/BetaBrite-Connection-Info2-300x58.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"58\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottdanesi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/BetaBrite-Connection-Info2-300x58.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottdanesi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/BetaBrite-Connection-Info2-768x149.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.scottdanesi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/BetaBrite-Connection-Info2.jpg 927w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This diagram illustrates the display connection to your PC<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These signs use a serial (aka. RS-232 or DB9) connection to your PC. \u00a0This type of connection is now very uncommon and is most likely not included on that nice new laptop you bought. \u00a0Don&#8217;t worry though, many products still use this protocol and there are USB to Serial Adapters available for cheap. \u00a0I would recommend getting a USB to Serial adapter with the <strong>FTDI Chipset<\/strong> as I have not tested any other type. \u00a0If you are lucky enough to have a serial connection on your PC then this is not a problem. \u00a0I still like to use the USB to Serial adapter since it will also extend the range of the cable that came with your display.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_133\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottdanesi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Cable-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-133\" class=\" wp-image-133 \" alt=\"Cable 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottdanesi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Cable-1.jpg\" width=\"186\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-133\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BetaBrite Serial Display Cable<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Speaking of which, you should have\u00a0received\u00a0a cable with your display that has a serial connection on one end and a\u00a0network\u00a0type plug on the other. \u00a0If you do not have this cable,\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0worry as they are inexpensive and can be found on eBay.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have all the necessary cables you will need to hook them together and power up the display.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Configuration:<\/h2>\n<p>Configuring the sign to work with the software is probably the easiest part. \u00a0The one thing you will need to know is what &#8220;COM Port&#8221; number that your serial connection is set to. \u00a0This is a whole number that is usually under 10. \u00a0You can find this number by going to your control panel in windows and selecting Device Manager. \u00a0Your serial port will be listed under the &#8220;Ports&#8221; section and have the COM Port displayed in the title.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have this\u00a0port\u00a0number, you can now open up the Tournament Manager application. \u00a0At this point be sure that your display is connected properly and powered on. \u00a0Click on the options tab and then click on the BetaBrite Options tab. \u00a0First select the COM port for your serial connection and then check the &#8220;Primary Display Output Enabled&#8221; checkbox.<\/p>\n<p>Your display should show the test message! \u00a0From here you can setup a &#8220;Standby&#8221; message that will display on the BetaBrite while you are setting up the\u00a0tournament. \u00a0You can use it to say when the\u00a0tournament\u00a0is starting and how much it costs to enter or whatever you want. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h2>References:<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&amp;_nkw=betabrite+cable&amp;_sacat=0&amp;_from=R40\">BetaBrite Cables on eBay<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=usb+to+serial+ftdi\">USB to Serial Cables on Amazon<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As always, let me know if you have any questions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Scott<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hey Everyone, So I have been getting a few questions about how to properly connect an LED sign to my tournament software. \u00a0It is actually pretty simple and I will walk you through it below.
